About SCDAP
The South Carolina Design Arts Partnership (SCDAP) is a joint initiative
of the South Carolina Arts Commission and Clemson University. Their mission
is to improve the quality of the built and natural environment through
design, education, and leadership training.
SCDAP serves as a catalyst for community design projects and initiatives.
Their programs are focused on creative and responsible design and planning
with an emphasis on cultural and environmental stewardship and innovation.
The partnership believes that collaborative engagement, coupled with design
thinking and education, is a powerful tool for environmental, social,
and economic problem solving.

Founded in 1994, the partnership uses the resources of Clemson University
and the community building expertise of the Arts Commission to provide
design assistance for cities and towns across the state and hosts the
annual Mayors Institute, South Carolina's premier design leadership training
event.
Our Clemson Partners include:
- The Clemson Institute for Economic & Community Development
- The Clemson University College of Architecture, Art, & Humanities
- The Clemson Cooperative Extension Service
- The partnership also has the ability to connect communities to valuable
resources and call on affiliated professionals in architecture, landscape

Research and public service are on-going activities in the Department and the College of Architecture , Arts & Humanities. Recent areas of research include sustainability analysis, energy assessment, water resource planning, land use studies, retail market analysis, housing and community development strategies, downtown market studies, geographic information systems, infrastructure and transportation planning, solid waste, environmental problems and health planning. Students often join these projects as research assistants. Public service projects are carried out on a regular basis in several classes throughout the year. Students carry out these projects in the same manner as a planning office. This experience, along with the internship and work-study opportunities, provide Clemson graduates with significant real world work experience preparing them for the job market.
Community Design Charrettes
Clemson Institute for Community and Economic Development
Design Charrettes are conducted in communities to assist them in developing
a marketing identity, understanding their place in their region, and development
of organizational infrastructure to control their destiny.
The South Carolina Mayors Institute for Community Design
Since 1999, the South Carolina Mayors Institute for Community Design
has been the flagship leadership program of the SC Design Arts Partnership.
Modeled after the national Mayors Institute on City Design, a program
inspired by Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, the Mayors Institute strives
to enhance and reinforce the participants' influence on the physical
form and economic vitality of their communities. The Mayors Institute
hosts an annual Design Colloquium during which mayors and designers
exchange ideas and information in a creative retreat-like atmosphere.
In recent years, the SC Mayors Institute has evolved to include additional
events and opportunities which empower communities and their leaders
to not only develop, but also to implement their visions for the future.
Five Mayors and their selected representatives are invited to participate
each year.
